Remember, remember, stay safe this November: Firework safety tips for little ones.
As we approach the festive season, we all look forward to the beautiful fireworks that light up the sky during Diwali and Bonfire Night. There are several public displays in the local area (see list below) but, families may also choose to organise their own private celebrations in their gardens. Although it’s an exciting prospect, we must remember to prioritise safety. At Sunny Days Nursery, we understand the importance of keeping children safe during fireworks displays. We believe that by teaching them the basics of fireworks safety, we can help ensure that celebrations are enjoyed without any accidents or mishaps. Our ultimate goal is to make sure that everyone has a wonderful time.
Lessons for little ones – safety essentials for young children Young children can benefit from learning some safety essentials for Diwali and Bonfire Night, but close adult supervision is still the best way to keep them safe around fireworks. It’s important to start teaching young children safety around bonfires, fireworks, and sparklers.
Making fireworks safety fun
Here at Sunny Days Nursery we talk about what to do in an emergency if things go wrong and use role play to introduce and practice STOP, DROP and ROLL: If your clothes catch fire, STOP, DROP and ROLL
- STOP what you’re doing
- DROP to the ground and cover your face with your hands
- ROLL over and over to put out the flames

Top tips to help keep children safe
You can start teaching your children the basics of how to keep safe around fireworks by sharing simple safety messages with them. Teaching them that although bonfires, fireworks, and sparklers are exciting, they can be dangerous and might hurt them, is a great place to start. It’s important that little ones know to listen to their grown up and stand in a safe place if they go to a fireworks display or have fireworks at home in their garden.
